This is where the story's setting begins as it includes all the information for the exposition. Florida is where it describes Grandpa portman's character and his past. Which, as the beginning of the story goes on, the major lead to the rising action is when Grandpa Portman dies tragically and Jacob's mind begins to imagine images in his dreams. His psychiatrist tells him the best way to try and cure his acute stress-reaction was to go and learn more about his grandpa's past which leads into the next setting in the book.

Early in the beginning of the story, Jacob found a letter. It was a clue to find the truth about how his grandpa grew up with these peculiar children in his interesting stories, if they are even real... Jacob was confused of his grandpas final words and decided to figure it all out. Once Jacob got the approval of his psychiatrist to go to the island, he soon headed off with his father to get down to the bottom of things.

Jacob finally finds the Peculiar Children by entering a Cairn, just by following a mysterious little girl who supposedly was Grandpa Portmans love interest when he was about Jacobs age. This is an important part of the book because it is where Jacob finds out everything about his grandpa.
