A World War II veteran and Jewish refugee, Abraham Portman loves to tell his grandson Jacob stories about his childhood. But these stories weren't your normal bedtime stories to a child, they consisted of monsters, and children with peculiar talents. As Jacob ages he begins to doubt his Grandfathers stories, even though Abe had pictures the children in an old cigar box.
When Jacob reaches high school, his Grandfather starts to lose his mind, the monsters from his stories suddenly became very really to him. Late one evening, Abe calls Jacob claiming the monsters are coming after him. When Jacob arrives at his house, he is no where to be found. But after a brief search he finds his Grandfather dying in the woods behind his house. Abe's last words were to go to the island, find the bird in the loop on Sept 3, 1940, on the other side of the old man's grave. As Jacob searches around him he catches a glimpse of one of the monsters from his grandfather's stories, but no one else believes him.

When Jacob goes inside to investigate the house, he finds a trunk full of pictures, which he pushes off the stairs and it lands in the basement. When he goes down to the basement he looks up to see children staring back at him. The children ran away, Jacob ran after Emma, and Millard, he walked into a cairn and came out in 1940.
- After spending time at the house with the peculiar children, Jacob begins to think he should stay there with them. He starts to have feelings for Emma, except if he was to stay he needed answers, when Enoch leads him into a room with a dead boy in a bed he is quite confused. - Wights were capturing ymbrynes, so that night Miss Peregrine explained everything to Jacob, that there were peculiar children who tried to become immortal rather than suspend time. But the experiment went terribly wrong, they turned them selves into monsters, that consume other peculiars.
- Jacob returns back home to his Father, and was told to watch for any suspicious people. Jacob's father tells him that he saw a man wearing sunglasses at night, once Miss Peregrine hears the news she didn't let him leave. A group of peculiars sneak out to raise Martin who was a human killed by a hollowgast to figure out who the wight was.
- Once they find Martin and bring him back to life, Dr. Golan walks in, who is in fact a wight. Jacob confided in Dr. Golan all along and Dr. Golan tells them that they are kidnapping ymbrynes to make the biggest loop in history.
- The children were attacked by a hollowgast, but made it out alive, while running away from the monster. Emma and Jacob took shelter in a old shack that sheep take shelter in during bad weather. Jacob ends up stabbing the monster with shears and killing it. Then they return back to the loop
- Once they return Miss Peregrine and Avocet are missing, the other peculiar children tell them that Dr. Golan kidnapped them and took them to the lighthouse. When they arrive at shore, Golan fires his gun at them, Millard swam in front of them and ends up getting shot. Bronwyn carries him the rest of the way then rips a door off of a ship and uses it as a shield. When they reach Golan, she throws it at him. Golan continued up the lighthouse even though he was in pain. Golan, drops his gun, but when he gets to the top, he throws the cage over the side of the lighthouse. Emma attempts to burn him until Jacob shoots him and Golan himself falls over the side of the lighthouse as well. They found Miss Peregrine, but Miss Avocet was no were to be found, when they return back to the house they discover that the loop didn't reset. Jacob then decided he was going to stay with the peculiar children, and leaves his father a note and while his father is awake Emma and Olive walk into the room showing off their talents, he was in shock so they left a picture to prove that it wasn't a figment of his imagination. Since the loop was destroyed they have to find a new one somewhere else in the world.
